ZTE Earmarking USD3 Billion for 5G Investment from 2017 Onwards

Chinese ZTE announced that it will expand R&D investments for 5G every year, starting from 2017, to align with China's goal of establishing the world's largest 5G commercial network by 2020, Reuters reported on July 1. Having 3,000 employees dedicated to 5G research, the company will double the investment to USD3 billion in 2017, up from USD1.5 billion in 2016. A total of 1.65 trillion RMB (USD24.6 billion) capital expenditure will be invested by 2025, making Chinese network equipment providers like ZTE and Huawei the major beneficiaries. China Mobile has launched a new base station in Guangzhou for 5G trial tests, according to the same source.
